Tribute – The Musical Life of Harry Begian documents the life of one of the world’s most renowned band conductors. Born to Armenian immigrant parents, Dr. Harry Begian (1921-2010) grew up and was educated in Dearborn, Michigan – where hearing the Detroit Symphony Orchestra while a junior high student was the catalyst that encouraged him to pursue music, play cornet in his school bands, and major in music at Detroit’s Wayne State University as well as earning a doctorate in music education from the University of Michigan.
Begian’s former students, colleagues of note, family members, and friends will lead the reader through his remarkable life of teaching, conducting, and fostering the spirit of passion for excellence, concentration, and achieving joy in music performance. Conducting positions at Detroit’s Cass Technical High School, Wayne State University, Michigan State University, and the University of Illinois solidified Begian’s legacy in the wind band profession. Further conducting appearances during retirement occurred at Purdue University, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. This eBook is a must read for all music educators who conduct school or university ensembles, as well as students who aspire to do the same. His rehearsal philosophy: CONSISTENCE, INSISTENCE, and PERSISTENCE – were always his goals.
